Nov 04, 2009 (newstodate): Air transportation of Fresh Norwegian salmon, one of Europe's largest airfreight commodities, is poised for new records in volume this year.
The increase in Norway's exports of fresh salmon to the world markets is primarily driven by a steep growth in sales to the US market, filling the void in supply after a bacterial infection has curbed Chile's salmon production.
-During the first nine months of this year, Norway has exported a total of 40,000 tonnes of fresh salmon to markets in the Far East, notably Japan. This is an increase by 15 percent, y-o-y, says Paul Aandahl, Seafood Norway market analyst.
-The North American market, however, has grown by no less than 622 percent, from last year's 1,800 tonnes to 13,000 tonnes during January-September, 2009.
-Other markets, including the Middle East and Africa, have imported some 1,100 tonnes of fresh Norwegian salmon, bringing the total so far into 2009 to some 55,000 tonnes, says Mr Aandahl.
Industry estimates have so far set 60,000 as the expected volume of Norway's salmon export airfreight, but with the latest indications the total would more likely end up around 70-75,000 tonnes.
