Nov 11, 2009 (newstodate): Latvian carrier airBaltic is keen to exploit the lowering the airport charges at Lithuania's Vilnius International Airport.
The Lithuanian ministry of transportation has announced a new charges scheme taking effect from December 1, 2009, prompting airBaltic to sign a new agreement with the airport.
Under the agreement, airBaltic will launch five new direct routes from Vilnius, and the airline will also evaluate opening another four new routes during the summer of 2010.
Before Christmas, the airline will launch flights from Vilnius to Paris, Berlin and Munich, while flights to Amsterdam and Rome will be offered by the start of the next year.
The fast response by airBaltic indicates the airline's aspiration of heeding the call for formation of a pan-Baltic carrier, aired by the three Baltic transport ministers at their meeting this autumn where it was agreed to set up an expert working group to study the prospect for a joint pan-Baltic airline.
