Nov 26, 2009 (newstodate): Iceland's air cargo business is recovering, but imports are still lagging behind.
-Iceland's main export airfreight commodity is fresh fish, and these volumes have remained strong and little affected by the over-all economic and financial crisis, says Gudrun Gudmundsdottir, Jonar Transport.
-Other Icelandic airfreight export commodities are electronics and pharmaceutical products. But we see pharma products increasingly turning from air to sea transportation due to issues of cargo rates. It seems that demands for fast delivery are easing in this segment these days.
-Airfreight import is certainly performing less well. With a comparative decrease by 30-35 percent, volumes are still far below pre-crisis levels, but the trend is however less negative now, so even here we are seeing some progress.
-The relative strength, or weakness, of Iceland's currency is of course crucial - and this issue remains highly volatile, says Ms Gudmundsdottir.
