Nov 27, 2009 (newstodate): The government of Iceland has decided to merge Keflavik Airport with Isavia to form a single state-owned company from early 2010.
Isavia is the service provider for all other aviation services in Iceland including air navigation and operation of the domestic airports.
The decision is presumably driven by considerations of economy, first of all needs to cut costs.
The integration of the Keflavik Airport operations into Isavia seems to run contrary to developments in other parts of the world where much effort is invested in singling out airport operations from aviation conglomerates, allowing for further privatisation and reduction of direct state control.
In 2006, the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration, ICAA, was reorganized, resulting in the establishment of the limited shareholding company, ISAVIA, that took over responsibility for the provision of air navigation services and airport operations.
ICAA retained the responsibility for public policy and safety regulation as well as assuming a more assertive role in economic regulation.
