Nov 13, 2009 (newstodate): Finnair reported positive growth in cargo volumes for October, but remains cautious about current market trends.
Growing by 4.8 percent in total volumes, the carrier handled 9,307 tonnes of cargo in October, 6,324 tonnes of which was Asian cargo that grew by 8.6 percent, y-o-y.
As capacity in the Asian segment was cut by 13 percent, the cargo load factor improved by 20.8 percentage-points to 90.2 percent leaving little room for further improvement unless capacity is restored.
-Although it seems that the actual decline in cargo volumes has stopped, we are still behind the "best times" and therefore the current capacity cuts are manageable, says Erkka Suvikumpu, Finnair Cargo VP marketing & business development.
-On the Asian routes we might, however, have a positive challenge ahead of us, and segmented products could be one way of tackling this issue.
-With the current market situation which abounds in excess capacity the timing is not right, but we will in the future launch a package of segmented cargo products including premium, normal general cargo, and stand-by cargo, says Mr Suvikumpu.
