Nov 30, 2009 (newstodate): Iceland's continued development of Keflavik Airport has lost steam during the current economic crisis.
-No construction projects are currently planned. The passenger terminal has recently been refurbished and expanded, but a planned cargo apron extension has been put on hold, says Fridthor Eydal, Keflavik Airport Defence Liaison and Corporate Communications manager.
-Work on a new master plan for the airport will be started soon, but one of the questions is still whether the operation of Reykjavik Airport, in the center of Reykjavik, will be terminated in the future or not.
-There is, however, no indication that such a move will be made any time soon, and the re-opening of the closed runway at Keflavik Airport remains very uncertain, for financial reasons if nothing else.
According to Mr Eydal, the airport still plans to upgrade some of the air navigation equipment, installed by the US military that earlier operated a military base at Keflavik.
