Nov 25, 2009 (newstodate): As yet another step in a seemingly never-ending story, the fledgling US carrier Baltia Airlines has reportedly taken delivery of its first aircraft.
Baltia Airlines claims that the Boeing 747-200 aircraft has been acquired by the company's own means, leaving it without any debts.
Earlier plans, first aired as far back as in 1989, included the lease of a similar aircraft from the Icelandic ACMI provider, Air Atlanta Icelandic.
The carrier will start out with flights between New York and St Petersburg, Russia, and will also set up a cargo division.
After consolidation of this first route, Baltia Air Lines plans to add flights to the capital cities of Eastern Europe, including Moscow, Riga, Kiev, and Minsk at a later date.
The CEO of Baltia Air Lines, Igor Dmitrowsky, a U.S. citizen born in Latvia, owns 43 percent of the company.
