Oct 02, 2009 (newstodate): The Faeroe Islands' Vagar Airport is to be significantly expanded, with longer runway and a new passenger terminal.
These projects have been topics of discussion for years, but the local government has now recommended that the runway be expanded from today's 1,250m to 1,799m - even more than the 1,600m earlier envisaged.
By extending the existing 1,250m runway eastwards by 350m and by another 200m westwards, the runway will be able to accommodate larger aircraft, including Atlantic Airways' new Airbus A319 that is slated for delivery in 2011.
An extended runway may also re-open the issue of operations at the airport by freighter aircraft to lift Faeroese seafood exports to international markets.
The government will also recommend the construction of a new passenger terminal with capacity to handle the airport's traffic in the next decade.
