Oct 23, 2009 (newstodate): There seems to be no end to creativity and entrepreneurial spirit in Iceland's aviation business circles, crisis or not - and spurred by today's favorably low aircraft leasing rates.
A yet-undisclosed group of Icelandair and ex-Icelandair pilots are reportedly already long into the process of setting up a new airline, and the granting of an Icelandic AOC is close at hand, industrial sources say.
The group is primarily working to introduce cargo, charters and ACMI operations with Boeing 757 or Boeing 767 aircraft, while launch of passenger service is also not ruled out, given a prospective business case.
The group has already identified its future aircraft but are waiting for the right business contract to emerge before firming up on an aircraft lease agreement.
The aim is reportedly to base the new carrier for operations outside Iceland to serve a yet-undisclosed market
Many pilots are on lay-off from Icelandair, and some of them seem to be
venturing into airline business themselves.
