Oct 07, 2009 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport continued its strong decline in cargo volumes through September, 2009.
The airport handled a total of 376 tonnes of cargo and mail - a decline by 22.8 percent, y-o-y.
Included in the totals were 254 tonnes of cargo and 122 tonnes of mail.
For January-September, the airport's statistics report 3,026 tonnes of cargo and mail, down 28.6 percent, y-o-y.
Since the start of this year, marked by the demise of Lithuania's national carrier flyLAL, the airport has had limited air traffic, with air services mainly provided by carriers operating smaller regional aircraft that offer only limited cargo capacity.
Prime among the airlines currently serving Vilnius is Latvia's airBaltic that also takes the #1 position as to air cargo.
In September, airBaltic's share of the airport's total cargo volumes was 41.26 percent, corresponding to 1,249 tonnes of cargo.
Second on the list was Aviavilsa, operating for DHL, with 23.2 percent of the cargo volumes, followed by Lufthansa with 11.65 percent of the market.
CSA held 11.53 percent of the volumes and Finnair another 6.17 percent.
