Oct 27, 2009 (newstodate): March 1, 2010, has now been set as the ultimate deadline for Turkish developer TAV to start the planned projects to modernize Macedonia's airports at Skopje and Ohrid.
In August 2008, TAV emerged as the sole bidder and therefore winner in the tender for a 20-year contract for concession and operation of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport, and the construction of the New Cargo Airport in Shtip, and plans were to start the projects shortly after.
TAV has, however, several times asked for a delay in the process, citing the current financial strains as the problem.
But - the Macedonian transport ministry has now set the final date for start of the process, and will not accept further delays.
