Oct 01, 2009 (newstodate): The Icelandic low-cost operator Iceland Express is reportedly preparing for two major new business projects.
One is to enter Lithuania's aviation market by setting up new low-fare airline named Lithuania Express, to be based in Vilnius International Airport, Lithuania.
Plans are to set up routes to European destinations from Vilnius, currently under-served after the national carrier flyLAL folded its wings by the start of this year.
Services will reportedly be started from December, 2009 already.
Another major project aims at launching new low-cost flights between Iceland and New York from summer 2010 with Boeing 757 aircraft, in direct competition to Icelandair's services.
News on the projects have not yet been confirmed by the carrier, though.
Iceland Express was set up in 2002 and began operations on February 27, 2003 with daily flights to London and Copenhagen using Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
The carrier now operates two Boeing 737-700 on a route network comprising 18 destinations.
