Oct 16, 2009 (newstodate): According to Icelandair Cargo, when volumes are shrinking the crux for sound business operations is optimization of resources and capacity.
-After the turn-around our strategy has a strict focus on serving the market's need for air cargo capacity on routes to and from Iceland, while great emphasis was earlier placed on development of Europe-US transit cargo, says Gunnar Mar Sigurfinsson, Icelandair Cargo managing director.
-As the market went down in 2008 we cut size to match the change in demand, and we are now operating only two Boeing 757-200 freighters on routes between Iceland and Europe/US, while three other aircraft have been moved to our ACMI business on lease contracts with other operators.
-We have thus now the ideal structure of fleet and organization, and a good rate of utilization of all resources. This means were now running what I would call a decent business, and if/when the market demands we will be ideally positioned to adjust scale of operations to match new growth potentials.
-We carry about 2/3 of our cargo on freighters, but the rest is lifted on Icelandair's passenger flights to 28 destinations. This gives us a rather broad pallet of options, says Mr Sigurfinsson.
