Oct 02, 2009 (newstodate): Within only 18 months, Georgia plans to open an entirely new airport at Poti.
The country's president has declared that the new airport will become the biggest airport in the Caucasus region, meeting European standards.
Georgia now has two international airports, at Tblisi and Batumi.
The Poti port area is to be established as a free economic zone within the framework of a Georgian-United Arab Emirates project inaugurated in April 2008, and construction of the planned new airport will be significantly boosted by the trade expected from this cooperation.
Both the port and airport at Poti were severely damaged during the recent conflict with Russia, but both facilities are being rebuilt now.
