Oct 16, 2009 (newstodate): Finland's air cargo volumes are low in 2009, dipping especially during the first half of the year.
-No business will survive without a positive approach, and we can certainly see some slight improvements in volumes after the gloomy start of the year, says Erik Byman, Ospentos managing director.
-But while there is a cautious recovery in the market there is still a long, long way to go to reach anything like last year's levels. To be honest, it is still in the balance and may tip either way.
-We are certainly seeing China's trade booming again, and this has reflected positively in airlines' cargo statistics. But as for exports the situation is rather dull for Finland. The main industrial drivers have long ago downsized their domestic production, outsourcing instead to production sites closer to their markets, and this generates little Finnish export air cargo.
-But on the other hand: who could foresee the enormous punch in volumes driven by the emergence of Nokia's cellular phone industry in the 70'ies and 80'ies. This wave has definitely subsided, but who knows what may follow in the future, says Mr Byman.
Ospentos, based in Finland and managed by owners Erik Byman and Leevi Ekman, is engaged in cargo and freight-related business throughout Finland, the Baltic States, Poland, Belorussia, Ukraine and Kaliningrad, and set up Ospentos International Ltd, managed by Haiti Arendi, was established in Tallinn, Estonia, in 2006.
