Oct 01, 2009 (newstodate): In a decision on September 30, 2009 the European Commission has decided not to raise any objections to the public financing of infrastructure developments at three Lithuanian airports Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga International Airports.
The nod by the Commission is crucial to Lithuania's current political debate on the future airports infrastructure after the completion of a thorough report by the ministry of transportation.
The main objective of the project is to improve the facilities of the three airports and to guarantee an appropriate infrastructure reflecting growing demand. The cost of the infrastructure projects is 121 million euro, of which the airports themselves will provide some 53 percent, while the remainder will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the European Cohesion Fund and national funding.
While details of the Lithuanian report on the future airports infrastructure has not yet been published, it at least seems that the future of the airports of Kaunas and Palanga has been secured, in contrast to speculations that all investments would go to the capital airport of Vilnius alone.
