Oct 09, 2009 (newstodate): Georgia's break-away province and self-declared republic, Abkhazia has signed an agreement with Russia for outsourcing of its air traffic management to Russia's transportation authorities.
Abkhazia is served by Sukhumi Dranda Airport that was heavily damaged during the civil war in the 90ies and now provides only domestic and UN flights.
Since the war the airport has not been open for commercial flights, but plans are on the table for opening of flights between Sukhumi Airport and Moscow, while Georgia threatens any international airline entering the airport with legal steps.
ICAO is also not to allow commercial flights at Abkhazia's Sukhumi Airport, maintaining that the airspace of Georgia remains a unified entity and it is up to Georgia's civil aviation authorities to issue an application for allowing flights at the airport.
