Oct 02, 2009 (newstodate): Billund Airport was not allowed to maintain its claim for "world's first" cargo outsourcing business, reported by newstodate, unchallenged for long. It soon prompted a response from Cargo Center Sweden.
-It is nice to read that Billund invented the outsourcing concept for agents and airlines, but strange that they are not aware that we have been doing exactly this on a large scale for decades at Arlanda airport, says Lars Keding, Cargo Center Sweden managing director.
-During the 1970'ies, a number of forwarders at Arlanda airport joined together to open a common handling company with the objective of saving on the cost of having their own separate warehouses. The idea took root and in the years that followed, even many non-owner forwarders decided to use this facility's services that among other things included the preparation of export cargo to "ready-for-carriage" status.
-Then in 1987, Cargo Center Sweden, as it came to be called, and being located ramp-side at Arlanda, started with airline handling under the same roof as forwarder handling. Today, our company handles cargo on behalf of 33 online and 120 offline air carriers as well as a large number of their customers- the forwarders.
-And we are not alone doing this. Both Gothenburg Landvetter Airport and Malmo Frakt Terminal have also been conducting their business in a similar manner, also since the 1970'ies, says Mr Keding.
At the core of the conflict in words over the "world's first" issue may be that Cargo Center Billund has branded its outsourcing department as a separate business serving only freight forwarders, and not airlines and other parties, with warehousing capabilities, which may be a different notion from the other cargo terminals mentioned.
