Jan 19, 2009 (newstodate): Following on a successful year 2008, Slovakia's Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport is seeing gloomier prospects for 2009.
In 2008 the airport handled a total of 2.2 mio passengers in 2008, up 10 percent, y-o-y.
For the current year, the aiport however expects passenger volumes to decline by some 15 percent, compared to last year, due to the general weakening of the world economy and the air travel markets.
Cargo prospects may be slightly better after the airport's contract with DHL Express, signed in 2008, providing for five weekly regular flights between Bratislava and Leipzig, the new European hub for DHL Express.
In 2008 the airport thus handled some 8,000 tonnes of cargo against only 2,000 tonnes in 2007, due to the DHL traffic after the integrator moved its freighter service to Bratislava from close-by Vienna Airport.
