Jan 21, 2009 (newstodate): Serbia is planning for construction of a new airport at Novi Sad, in the country's northern region.
The planned airport will be constructed to allow for handling of medium-size passenger and cargo aircraft.
The project is divided into four stages, with the first stage comprising construction of a 2,000 m runway, the second will comprise construction of a passenger terminal, and the last two stages will comprise installation of airport infrastructure to meet ICAO Category C standards.
The existing small airport at Novi Sad is primarily used by private sports aircraft, but the region hopes to attract low-cost operators with the new airport.
Expectations are that the final decision will be made before the end of February, 2009, and the entire project would be completed within three years after the go-ahead.
