Jan 12, 2009 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport saw little development in its air cargo volumes in 2008.
The airport handled a total of 5,718 tonnes of cargo and mail, down 1.08 percent on 2007.
November and December proved especially depressed with decreases by 11.2 and 6.4, respectively.
Like Latvia's Riga Airport, Vilnius Airport has lost the significant China-to-Russia transfer cargo business to Estonia's Tallinn Airport that has been consistently growing in volumes during the recent years.
One reason is Lithuanian customs' practices that preclude the handling of incoming shipments as transfer shipments, requiring full import handling that delay the flow of goods.
