Jan 15, 2009 (newstodate): The Aeroprojekt Research Institute of Moscow has won a competition to produce a masterplan and investment plan for construction of a new airport to serve Irkutsk.
The new airport will be located some 25 km from Irkutsk, replacing the current Irkutsk Airport that lies in the center of Irkutsk and was in the summer of 2006 the scene of a fatal aircraft crash by S7 Sibir Airlinse.
The decision to build the new airport was made in November, 2006, and after the signing of an MoU with Aeropeojekt the design period will last till the end of 2009, with construction work to start immediately after if the financial issues have been settled.
