Jan 30, 2009 (newstodate): As most carriers, Lufthansa Cargo is also feeling the negative effects from the global financial and economic crisis.
In December, 2008, the carrier's cargo volumes plummeted by 21.4 percent, y-o-y, and it has scaled back its freighter services to match decreasing market demands.
Demand was still at low level after the turn of the year owing to longer works holidays over Christmas, production cutbacks and short-time work in an array of industries.
- 2009 will be a challenging year for us, but all in all we are confident that our flexibility, our strategic focus and quality lead will help us to emerge strengthened from the crisis, says Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa Cargo Chairman.
To safeguard jobs, Lufthansa Cargo and the German Works Council have now reached agreement on the introduction of short time affecting around 2,600 employees of the Lufthansa cargo carrier in Germany.
