Jan 12, 2009 (newstodate): Traffic slowed down during the latter part of 2008, but Finnair still saw its total cargo volumes up by 3.5 percent, y-o-y, during January-December.
The carrier handled a total of 102,144 tonnes of cargo, primarily thanks to the Asian traffic that generated 67,447 tonnes and increased by 14 percent.
Second in volumes came the European traffic that declined by 7.6 percent to 20,698 tonnes, followed by North Atlantic that managed to grow 1.4 percent to 7,508 tonnes.
December proved a serious blow to Finnair Cargo as volumes dropped 22.2 percent, y-o-y, to 6,828 tonnes as the Asian traffic lost 22.2 percent, y-o-y, in volumes totalling 4,164 tonnes, while European volumes were down 19.1 percent to 1,613 tonnes.
The decline was also due to planned cuts in capacity as destinations were suspended and frequencies reduces on several lines, including the Asian traffic.
The cargo load factor in December was, however, down by 16.5 percentage-points to 47.4 percent, and by two percentage-points to 60 percent during January-December.
