Jan 30, 2009 (newstodate): Aeroflot Cargo has now summed up its preliminary results from its first full year of operations as an independent company.
In 2008 the company handled a total of 150,304 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase by 10.7 percent compared to 2007 when the company was still part of Aeroflot.
86,395 tonnes was flown in the belly holds of Aeroflot passenger aircraft, a modest increase by 1.1 percent, while freighters lifted 63,910 tonnes of cargo - an increase by 27.2 percent.
The significant increase in cargo on freighter aircraft was the result of the introduction of the company's first MD-11F freighter to replace the fleet of DC-10-40 aircraft.
The company now operates three MD-11F freighters, and three more are expected for delivery before the end of 2009.
The last DC-10-40 aircraft was withdrawn from service by the end of 2008.
During 2008, Aeroflot Cargo also operated two Boeing 737-300F aircraft that were, however, withdrawn again before the end of 2008 due to uneconomical performance
