Sep 16, 2008 (newstodate): By 2012, Hungary may have a new airport at Szombathely, in the west of the country, 10 km from the border with Austria.
Behind the plans is a group of Chinese and Hungarian investors as well as the regional government, sources say.
The business plan envisages the proposed airport to serve both passenger and cargo traffic between Western Europe and China, building on estimates of 250,000 passengers and more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo per year when fully completed.
The current Szombathely Airport is a small airfield with a 1,600 m grass runway.
