Sep 17, 2008 (newstodate): Mongolia's new international airport to serve Ulaan Bataar will be located at Sergelen, some 50 km south of the capital.
The current airport at Ulaan Baataar is hampered by low visibility and unfavorable winds, resulting in a poor operational performance.
The new airport will be built with Japanese loans amounting to 28,807 mio yen, and the project will be realised during 2008-2015.
By 2017, two years after its planned completion in September 2015, the new airport will have some 1.4 mio passengers, including 1.2 mio international passengers, and cargo volumes through the airport are expected to rise from today's 2,344 tonnes to 10,000 tonnes, including 8,000 tonnes of international cargo.
Thanks to the improved weather parametres, delays and cancellations are estimated to drop to 0.5 percent against today's 2.3 percent at the existing capital airport.
