Sep 30, 2008 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport has now completed construction works on its new second runway.
Commissioned on September 30, 2008, the 4,500m runway is part of the ongoing expansion of Almaty Airport with other projects including new power facilities and new communications systems, and by the end of this first phase by 2010 passenger volumes will increase to two mio passengers per year, increasing further to four mio by 2014, and to six mio by 2020 in following phases.
The new runway will be certified to CAT I/IIIB, and will allow the airport to handle all types of aircraft.
