Sep 10, 2008 (newstodate): Despite today's small volumes of cargo, western Hungary's FlyBalaton International Airport is upbeat about its prospects for future development as a cargo airport.
-Work on a new industrial park immediately by the airport is progressing, and we expect marketing of its facilities to start from 2009. This wil bring in many new companies with a need for air cargo uplift, says Lajos Palko, FlyBalaton Airport marketing director.
-Already today, however, many internaitonal companies including e.g. Nokia and Flextronics are located within our catchment area, and we constitute a feasible alternative to a wide range of range of congested airports in the region, like Budapest, Vienna, and Zagreb.
-Today we have only ad-hoc charters as DHL left us from this summer after operating daily AN-26 freighter services while maintaining their DHL Cargo Terminal at the airport, now served with trucking connections.
-In 2006 we had no airfreight at all, in 2007 we generated 1,000 tonnes, and we are convinced that this will rise sharply as the new Industrial Park starts to operate, says Mr Palko.
