Sep 5, 2008 (newstodate): Croatia's Zagreb Airport is in acute need of expansion to cope with a sustained rise in traffic volumes.
The airport is seeing passenger volumes up by 14 percent, and plans to build a new 65,000 sq m passenger terminal by 2011, enabling the handling of 3.3 mio pasengers per year.
With the completion of the new terminal, the current facility will be dedicated to low-cost operations.
The plans also include the construction of a new runway in parallel to the existing 3,252 m runway.
During the first half of this year, the airport handled a total of 5,557 tonnes of cargo, while last year's total was 12,564 tonnes, an increase by 21 percent.
