Sep 15, 2008 (newstodate): Batumi Airport, in the break-away province of Abkhazia, is said to be ready to accept commercial air traffic.
In 2006, the Turkish construction company TAV landed a contract with Georgia's govenment for renovation and modernisation of Batumi Airport, including construction of a new passenger terminal supported by EBRD.
As part of the contract, TAV Georgia won the right to operate the airport for 15.5 years after completion of the projects, but the current unstable situation around Abkhasia has rendered this untenable.
