Aug 26, 2008 (newstodate): The Russian airport Kazan International Airport, in Tatarstan, is embarking on a major airport expansion project to be completed by 2012.
Comprised by the plans are the construction of the new rumway, capable of handling all types of passenger and cargo aircraft, two new aprons to double the current aircraft parking capacity, new hangars, aircraft fuelling center, and new buildings for GSE.
Also in the plans is the construction of a new cargo terminal and a logistics center.
In June, 2008, Bulgaria's Chimimport won the tender to modernise the airport, and together with Tatarstan's govenment Chimimport will co-finance the projects that also include the modernisation of Tatarstan airline Aviakompania Tatarstan's aircraft fleet.
In 2007 the airport handled some 6,000 tonnes of cargo, up 46 percent, y-o-y.
