Aug 21, 2008 (newstodate): Lack of adequate ground services equipment is a key factor behind flight delays at Kazakhstan's airports.
In 2007, Air Astana's average on-time performance was 76 percent, reaching 80 percent during January-October, but going down to 60-65 percent during November-December.
The country's Ministry of Transportation has indentified these categories of flight delays: adverse weather conditions 35 percent of delays, late delivery of cargo, lack of delivery vehicles and staff, late fuelling 37 percent, problems in passengers' check-in and technical failure of aircraft 11 percent, border control nine percent, and ATC issues eight percent.
But the single most crucial underlying cause is lach of necessary facilities including buses, air stairs, catering vehicles, fuelling vehicles and de-icing equipment.
