Jun 18, 2008 (newstodate): The introduction of the Airbus A380 by Singapore Airlines has not seen cargo volumes rising much.
-The A380 is used primarily to add passenger capacity on high-density routes where airport gate and slot congestion make it difficult for us to add more services using smaller-capacity aircraft, says a Singapore Airlines Cargo spokesperson.
-With regard to cargo, the A380 has a cargo capacity similar to that of the B747-400, the aircraft it has replaced. Hence the impact on capacity available has not been significant.
-A point to note, however, is that cargo weight is also dependent on the nature of the cargo. For the sectors we currently fly on the A380, like Sydney and London, the cargo is generally bulkier, thereby occupying a larger amount of space in the belly-hold.
-Having said that, the cargo performance on our A380 flights has been satisfactory.
