Jun 23, 2008 (newstodate): Russia's Krasnoyarsk Airport plans to complete the implementation of new navaid systems before the end of 2008, with ICAO Cat II certification of the upgraded runway to follow before the end of 2009.
These completion of these projects constitutes the precondition for Lufthansa Cargo's move of the current freighter hub at Astana, Kazakhstan, to Krasnoyarsk.
According to the MoU signed between the airport, Lufthansa Cargo and AiRUnion, Lufthansa Cargo will move to Krasnoyarsk within six months after these conditions are met.
Lufthansa Cargo will then operate some 40 weekly MD-11F flights to and from Japan, Korea and China through Krasnoyarsk, gaining the benefits from shorter flying times in the process.
The move by Lufthansa Cargo was, however, prompted by successful use of Russia's overflight rights as an efficient weapon to force the carrier into Krasnoyarsk.
