Jun 5, 2008 (newstodate): The Icelandair Group is currently re-evaluating its future fleet strategy, with a decision likely to emerge by the end of this year.
In February 2005, Icelandair became the first European carrier to place an order with Boeing for delivery of the 787 Dreamliner.
The carrier initially placed a firm order for two Dreamliners, with options for five more aircraft, later changing two options into firm orders in April, 2006.
The first two 787 aircraft were due to arrive in 2010, with the next to follow by 2012, but Boeing has now postponed these deliveries by some 28 months.
The Icelandair Group has decided that two of the four aircraft will be placed elsewhere, and is now evaluating its future fleet strategy to decide if it will itself operate the remaining two Dreamliners at all, or divest itself of the entire Dreamliner fleet.
Icelandair's first Boeing 787 will be placed with Czech company Travel Service, 50 percent owned by the Icelandair Group, and one 787 has now been leased to Air Niugini.
On April 11, 2008, the Icelandair Group also cancelled lease agreements covering four new Airbus A330-200F freighters, due to arrive in 2010/2011.
