Jun 5, 2008 (newstodate): The EU Commission is in "close contact" with the Hungarian authorities over Malev.
AiRUnion now controls 99.95 percent of the shares in Malev, by far exceeding EU's limit of 49 percent non-EU ownership crucial for maintaining the carrier's EU designation.
-Malev, like any other Community air carrier, must be able to demonstrate to its national licensing authority that it is at all times owned and effectively controlled by Community interests, says Mate Gergely,
European Commission Directorate General for Energy and Transport spokesman.
-The responsibility for ensuring compliance by Malev with Community requirements on ownership and control lies with the Hungarian authorities, he says.
The spokesman however refutes that the "close contact" curently being undertaken is equivalent to an investigation.
