May 5, 2008 (newstodate): Sweden's Gothenburg Landvetter Airport remains optimistic about its cargo business despite a decline in total volumes in 2008.
During this year's Q1, the decline in volumes handled at the airport was 23 percent, to 12,407 tonnes, including 6,250 tonnes of imports, down 28 percent, and 6,177 tonnes of exports, down 17 percent.
-The reason behind this decline is the pull-out of freigher services by Cargolux and MAS since last summer, says Lena Stavmo, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport Route & Aviation Development Manager.
-Comparisons between 2008 and 2007 will thus remain blurred until fresh statistics from the start of this year's second half, when a more reliable picture will return.
-We are still in the midst of a large-scale building process, with a new TNT terminal now in the final stage, and a new terminal, to be operated by Spirit, to be completed during the first months of 2009. We are therefore currently not in a position to approach the market with a more aggressive marketing campaign to atract new airlines.
-The airport has now eight weekly freighter operations, including three by Lufthansa Cargo and Emirates, respectively, one by British Airways World Cargo and DHL, and one by Asiana, says Ms Stavmo.
