May 7, 2008 (newstodate): Russia's Irkutsk Airport is now working on the resurfacing and extension of its runway, causing traffic to stop for five night hours from May 15 to June 30, 2008.
The worls are part of the airport's on-going project for modernisation of the Siberian airport.
The modernisation program includes re-surfacing and lengthening of the runway, a new domestic terminal and new ILS, runway lighting and other systems, planned to be completed by August, 2008.
In the meantime, plans are maturing for construction of a new airport to replace the current one of Irkutsk.
Three locations are being assessed, and a decision on where to start construction of a new airport is to be made not later than by the end of May, 2008, after which construction work is scheduled to be launched from July, 2008, already.
