May 22, 2008 (newstodate): The skies over Russia and the CIS have now been cleared for Embraer's ERJ 145 regional jet family, including the ERJ 135, the ERJ 140, and the ERJ 145.
The Interstate Aviation Committee has issued its approval of the aircraft that can now be registered and imported by airlines in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
According to Embraer, the Russian and CIS markets for regional aircraft may require up to 510 aircraft over the next 20 years, representing a significant opportunity for Embraer.
The aircraft will, however, meet fierce competition from Russia's own regional aircraft, the SuperJet 100 family that will sell some 15 percent cheaper than its western alternative and provide similar operational cost-efficiency.
