May 6, 2008 (newstodate): Air traffic is secured until 2016 at Iceland's Reykjavik Airport, but after that the issue remains open.
A recent design competion produced many alternate visions, including one that maintained air traffic, while all other described scenarios without aircraft operations.
-It remains a political issue to determine the future of the Icelandic capital's airport, but if the current airport is eventually closed down, another site must be found to secure ambulance and SAR flights, says an airport official.
So far no deadline for a final political solution has been announced.
The airport is used for domestic and corporate flights as well as ferry flights between USA and Europe.
A request by Iceland Express to start international flights from Reykjavik Airport was turned down, but the company will be allowed to launch domestic flights.
Rekjavik Airport is located close to the city centre, while the international airport at Keflavik is some 40 km away.
