May 14, 2008 (newstodate): With an increase by 27.4 percent in 2007, the Norwegian IATA air cargo marked experienced the strongest growth in the Nordic region, but volumes have dipped during this year's first quarter.
-The Norwegian market was down 3-5 percent in volumes during Q1, but we have grown significantly in this shrinking market, says Kay Whichmann, Lufthansa Cargo Nordic general manager.
-It remains, however, a challenge to handle the volumes of Norwegian salmon that is a high-density, big-volume but low-rate commodity. If flights were full, we would find it difficult to ensure long-term capacity for customers in this segment.
-Also the development in exchange rates makes this export rather volatile. When the Norwegian Crown rises against the US dollar, it becomes hard for Norwegian salmon exports to compete against other suppliers, like Canada.
-We must, however, remember that Norway is more than salmon exports. Other important segments are ships spares, oil industry equipment, and electronics.
-Our sales of capacity on Jade Airlines have also proved very valuable in the Norwegian market, opening new hubs outside Frankfurt for us and enabling us to fly Norwegian exports at competitive rates from Europe to the Far East, says Mr Wichmann.
