May 2, 2008 (newstodate): Hungary plans to build a new passenger and cargo airport at Mezokovesd on the site of a former AFB and a small airfield that operated domestic flights until 1967.
A Hungarian-Irish investment group has won the tender to operate the planned airport for a 100 year period.
In the plans is the construction from 2009 of a new runway with ILS and runway lighting systems, and a logistics centre to be completed within three years.
Cargo operations are expected to constitute some 80 percent of the airport's future operations.
