May 21, 2008 (newstodate): The Russian federal government has allocated funds to realise construction of a new airport in the Komi Republic, Russia.
A process will soon be started to identify a general contractor to design and manage the airport project.
Work on a new airport, located at Sokolovka, to serve Komi's capital started in 1982, but has been suspended since the end of the 90'ies due to lack of funds.
The region is currently served by two small airport, inadequate to meet demands for passenger and cargo traffic.
German companies Siemens and Intra-Bau have reportedly showed interest in participating in the project, and the commissioning of a new airport is slated for 2010.
