May 8, 2008 (newstodate): Kazakhstan maintains a strong focus on building the country's airport infrastructure.
According to report on Q1 status by the Kazakh vice minister of transportation, Azat Bektura, construction work on a second runway at Almaty Airport has now been completed, and the runway will be commissioned in Q3, 2008.
In 2008, funds will be allocated out of the state budget to overhaul the runway of Kyzlorda Airport, and reconstruction of the passenger terminal of Aktobe Airport is also to be completed before the end of this year.
In Q1 2008, Kazakhstans airports handled more than 927,000 passengers, up 22 percent y-o-y, while the combined volumes of air cargo, luggage and mail grew by 10 percent to a total of 17,000 tonnes, of which air cargo accounted for 3,800 tonnes.
