May 29, 2008 (newstodate): Hungarian carrier Malev will reportedly become a member of Russia's airline alliance, AiRUnion.
Malev, acquired by the end of 2007 after a tender, is 99.5 percent owned by the Hungarian AirBridge consortium, of which Boris Abramovich, lead shareholder of AirUnion, holds a 49 percent share.
In 2007, Malev was admitted as a full member of the oneworld airline alliance.
By the end of 2007 the EU Commission decided to open an investigation with the Hungarian authorities as to control and ownership of Malev Hungarian Airlines.
At 99.95 percent, AiRUnion's ownership by far exceeds EU's limit of 49 percent non-EU ownership crucial for maintaining the carrier's EU designation.
