May 29, 2008 (newstodate): Hungary's Budapest Ferihegy Airport, since June 2007 owned by HOCHTIEF AirPort, aims at a major expansion of its air cargo business.
According to current plans, yet to be finalised, the airport will triple the area of its cargo terminal from currently 10,000 to som 30,000 sq m in a first phase of the project to be completed by 2010, also comprising four Boeing 747 freigher parking stands in front of the cargo terminal.
By the end of 2010 the airport expects to reach an annual capacity of 132,000 tonnes after completion of the first phase of the project.
The airport has been succesful in attracting new freighter operations, with Jade Cargo as the latest newcomer with two weekly Boeing 747-400 freighter fligts to Shenzhen, China, from June, and Cargolux now online with six weekly flights from Hong Kong, Bangkok and Dubai, and AirBridge Cargo offering a weekly flight to Moscow.
