Apr 16, 2008 (newstodate): Russia is mulling plans for a resumption of air services to Sukhumi, in Abkhazia.
Sukhumi is the capital of Abkhazia, a de facto independent republic internationally recognized as being an autonomous republic within Georgia, but much disputed between Russia and Georgia.
Having now resumed air services between Tblisi, Georgia, and Moscow, Russia reportedly sees a new opening for talks on flights between Sukhumi and Russia as well.
Abkhazia is served by Sukhumi Dranda Airport that was heavily damaged during the civil war in the 90ies, and now provides only domestic and UN flights.
Russian specialists have assessed the airport's technical infratructure, claiming that it will be able to accomodate scheduled international services.
