Mar 17, 2008 (newstodate): Airline consolidation in Russia is expected to reduce the number of carriers to 10-15 within few years.
178 airlines are currently active in Russia, but only five of these carry 52 percent of all Russian airline passengers.
The consolidation move is driven by Aeroflot and AiRUnion.
AiRUnion now comprises five leading airlines including Krasair, Samara, Omskavia, Domodedovo Airlines, and Sibaviatrans that together lifted a total of 3.6 million passengers in 2007.
Russia's single largest airline remains Aeroflot that accounted for 39 percent of Russia's international and 11 percent of its domestic passenger volumes.
Aeroflot is reportedly in the process of merging with Vladivostok Avia, Dalavia and Sakhalin Air Services.
