Mar 17, 2008 (newstodate): Russia has succeeded in its efforts to force Lufthansa Cargo to move its cargo hub from Astana, Kazakhstan, to Krasnoyarsk, Siberia.
Using the issue of overflight rights for Lufthansa Cargo's freighter between Europe and Asia, Russia held the strong card against Lufthansa Cargo's wish to use the Kazakh hub that saves flight time and fuel on the routes.
Russia is currently modernising Krasnoyarsk Airport to match international standards, and Lufthansa Cargo has accepted to move its hub within five months after completion of the construction and modernisation works.
Russia has granted the company overflight rights till the end of the coming summer schedule, and also granted new overflight rights to South Korea.
Lufthansa Cargo reportedly refuses to see a connection between the granting of overflight rights and move of the cargo hub.
